Talim and Haibo had given me another stone, this one green to call them with if we caught the arakryll. All I had to do to activate it was tap it three times. On the third time it hummed a musical note and then fell silent. A few moments later the gate anchor that had been bolted to the floor of the cistern began to glow. The gate sprang open and Talim, Haibo and Gavin stepped through. All with weapons at the ready.

“Is that any way to greet a friend?” I asked.

“We were unsure. You could have been compromised.” Talim answered as they lowered their weapons.

“Here’s your proof, elfboy.” I pitched the spear covered in dried ichor to Gavin. “Will that be enough?” Gavin looked at it and the necklace attached to it, and nodded, reluctantly. “Now, I want to talk to Talim. Alone.”

Haibo and Gavin looked askance at Talim. She nodded and they disappeared back into the gate.

“I helped your brother…”

“Half-brother.” She corrected

“Half-brother. Now I want something in return.”

“You have the gratitude of the Resistance.” She scowled. “What more do you require?”

“I want you to open a gate from here to the land of the arakryll.”

“What?” Talim stared at me with disbelief.

“I want to send it home.”

“I would have to close the gate home before I could open a new one.”

“Haven’t I given you enough proof to trust me?” She looked at me for a long time before finally nodding.

She walked over to the gate anchor, touched certain runes that were etched into its face, and the gate winked out of existence. From her pouch she pulled another gate anchor, this one carved from jade. As she touched the jade anchor to the gate anchor, an image formed in the air above them. A map of all of the known world was displayed there. A tiny green pinprick of light glowed over the place that was Hammertown. Red lights also began to appear on the face of the map. Talim touched one that was hovering over a tiny island, far across the Niration Sea. The red light turned green as she touched it. Talim then separated the two pieces and re-activated the gate. The whole procedure took less than five minutes.

“It leads to the arakryll lands now?”

She nodded.

“Shall we?” I motioned for her to enter the gate.

As we stepped through the gate the world was swallowed up by a bright tube of multicolored lights. Dizziness swamped me and I stumbled. Then it cleared and I found myself standing in a dense forest of massive trees the like of which I have never seen in my life. Huge trees. The building that my office was in would fit inside the trunk of each one of these trees. Talim seemed to be just as stunned as I was.

“I guess you’ve never been here either.”

“No. I had heard tales, but…” She let that sentence hang.

“Okay, wait here. And keep your eyes peeled.” Before she could answer I dashed back through the gate. More prepared this time, I only stumbled a little as I stepped back into the cistern an ocean away.
